Method 1: Search the Entrez Structure database directly for terms(s) of interest
- Open the Entrez Structure search page. If a 3D structure for your protein of interest exists in the database, you can simply search for terms that might appear in the record. For example, retrieve structure records that have the words prostaglandin and synthase in their title:
prostaglandin[title] AND synthase[title]
- Note that various data submitters might use different terminology to describe the same gene or protein, so it is often helpful to search for synonyms, including acronyms, full spellings, and disease names if appropriate. (The Entrez Gene record for a given gene often lists multiple synonyms if you'd like to include additional ones in your search; see GeneID 5742: human PTGS1 as an example.)
Using some of the synonyms, you can expand your retrieval, for example, try a search for:
(prostaglandin[title] AND synthase[title]) OR cyclooxygenase[title] OR (PTGS1 OR COX1 OR COX3)
- If desired, add other types of terms to the search such as source organism, author name, and more. (See the MMDB help document for additional search tips and information about available search fields.) For example, limit the search results to human proteins only by specifying the desired source organism, as in the search for:
(prostaglandin[title] AND synthase[title]) OR cyclooxygenase[title] OR (PTGS1 OR COX1 OR COX3) AND human[orgn]
